Getting Around
Because
of the islands and the questionable safety of maritime
transport, the best way of getting around is by plane.
Traveling by road might take more time than expected
because of the poor condition of the road network.
Local transport is easiest
by taxi. The rates of hotel taxis can be several times
higher than normal and the fare must be agreed before
the trip, but they are much safer than ordinary taxis.
When using an ordinary taxi, the meter must never
be switched off.
Flat fare arrangements
always favor the driver. You should always check the
destination from a map before the trip to be able
to guide the driver, because he most probably will
not know all the street names.
There
are plenty of car-rental companies mostly with offices
located near hotels and in the major shopping malls.
Metered taxies are a viable alternative and are always
available for tourist.
Light Railway Transit (LRT) is the fastest and cheapest
way to go. Buses ply most of the city's major thoroughfares.
Riding a jeepney is the country's most popular mode
of transportation and is an experience unique to the
Philippines.
Vehicles may be rented
with or without a driver. If you wish to do your own
driving, you must have a valid foreign or international
license.
