Communication Facilities - General

Philippine Long distance Telephone Company (PLDT), the leading telecommunications company, offers modern facilities and services that include international direct dialing (IDD),   telex, and facsimile. Worldwide  courier delivery, postal, and telegraph services are also available.

Making International Calls
The big hotels have direct overseas dialing. Otherwise, dial 108 to reach the operator. Whether or not the party is at the other end, a connection fee is charged.

Local Calls
All operators speak English. Outside Manila, phone numbers vary in length from five to seven digits - you may even find phone numbers of varying lengths within one town.

Domestic/Interstate Calls
For domestic long-distance calls, you need to go through an operator by dialing 109, unless your phone has direct dialing, now being introduced in stages. Area codes for some key destinations are: Baguio, 74; Cebu City, 32; Davao City, 82; Iloilo City, 33; Puerto Princesa, 48; Vigan and Laoag, 77; Zamboanga City, 62.

Public Pay Phones
Local calls are untimed, except for those made on a pay phone, which cost P2 for the first three minutes.

Sending Mail
For letters to Australia, stamps cost ?; the cost is P8 for a postcard or an aerogram.

Receiving Mail
Letters sent care of "poste restante" to the Manila General Post Office (Plaza Lawton, Manila, PHONE: 2/527-8327 or 2/527-0069) will be held for you.
